A Further Note on Runs in Independent Sequences

Given a sequence of letters generated independently from a finite alphabet, we consider the case when more than one, but not all, letters are generated with the highest probability. The length of the longest run of any of these letters is shown to be one greater than the length of the longest run in a particular state of an associated Markov chain. Using results of Foulser and Karlin (19...

A note on the product homomorphism problem and CQ-definability

The product homomorphism problem (PHP) takes as input a finite collection of relational structures A1, . . . ,An and another relational structure B, all over the same schema, and asks whether there is a homomorphism from the direct product A1 × · · · × An to B. This problem is clearly solvable in non-deterministic exponential time. It follows from results in [1] that the problem is NExpTimecomp...

A Note on Families of Stable Matrices

Many topological properties of the whole family of stable polynomials and matrices have been studied in a number of publications (see e.g., [1,3–7,11,12]). The present paper continues these investigations with the aim of strengthening these results in the sense that instead of simple-connectivity we show stronger property of contractibility of the various families of stable matrices from this p...

A note on traces of set families

A family of sets F ⊆ 2[n] is defined to be l-trace k-Sperner if for any l-subset L of [n] the family of traces F|L = {F ∩L : F ∈ F} does not contain any chain of length k+ 1. In this paper we prove that for any positive integers l′, k with l′ < k if F is (n−l′)-trace k-Sperner, then |F| ≤ (k − l′ + o(1)) ( n bn/2c ) and this bound is asymptotically tight.
